Basic Training Information for LPG
Liquid petroleum gas or LPG is a colourless and odourless fuel derived from natural gas. LPG contains 90% propane. It is extracted in a process called distilling.

Considerations
LPG fuel can be really safe but it should be carefully handled to prevent fire and explosions which may occur with incorrect installation or maintenance of gas lines. Liquid petroleum gas domestic appliances need proper maintenance and installation in order to prevent mishaps.

Prevention
Accident-prevention training is critical for anybody working directly with liquid petroleum gas. Correct refueling ways and methods to check for leaks should be included in training. Training must also include knowing how to wear personal protective gear and being alert to hazards such as loose fittings or damaged hoses.

Emergency Preparation
LPG could be a volatile fuel, so employees should know emergency procedures in the event of fires and explosions. Training must include first aid, evacuation and gas leak control.

Fuel Storage
Storage of tanks - whether a small fuel canister or a large refueling tank - must be at a secure location a safe distance from any building. "No Smoking" warnings should be posted. To ensure tanks are only accessed by authorized employees, the tanks need to be locked in a secure enclosure which is designed to be protected from vehicle impact. Concrete bumpers or other retaining systems are great. The fueling station should have an accessible fire extinguisher. Only those trained to use the fueling station should be permitted to do so. Employees also must be trained to use the fire extinguisher.

Operator Training
OSHA and HRSDC require that drivers undergo training consisting of hands-on, practical, and in-class training. Trainees will be tested to make certain that they understand the safety issues involved in forklift operation.
